Andy Westerman only joined Alltraders five a side team in July 2000, but he’s
already a legend at the club. We’re proud to bring you a video clip of the
wonder goal that made his name.
This January, Alltraders made it to the quarter final of the
Crawley Winter Fives competition to face Cowboys and Indians, winners of the
previous 9 competitions.
The capacity crowd of 4 were treated to a great game, including 3 cracking goals
from Andy. The pick of them was a delightful lob from thirty yards out.
Unfortunately it was straight into his own goal.
What should have been a gentle back pass instead soared "high into the
night sky, sailing majestically in the gentle glow of the floodlights" and
into the Alltraders' goal. Andy was later quoted as saying that the ball was
caught by a "sudden gust of wind".
Though he went on to score two goals for his own team, Alltraders ending up
losing 3-2 and being knocked out. The team are now eager to see if Andy can
outdo himself in this season's Autumn fives, current being held at Crawley
Leisure centre.
Sadly for Andy, this own-goal
gaff made national headlines when it was picked up by Kevin Frances during his
weekly review for the Daily Star! Click on the 'Daily Star' link on the left
frame for all the details.
